Family Mountain Reunion 2021: The wins

Image
The hikers started their journey around 7a.m.  There were a lot of wins at this year's mountain reunion of siblings and our children, spouses, niece, and friends, and a few misses that we can work on for next year. No year will be complete--there will always be some awesome serendipitous moments, good planning, fun activities, lots of good memory making, and ideas for change in the future. Every year some will not be able to come due to commitments, but we hope that the more this tradition occurs, the more people will be able to come. The wins this year were many.  Food Having buffet style meals where there's something for everyone worked well. Also, preparing good foods ahead, then heating them up in the crockpot saved time and space. We had a pasta bar one night and a chili bar the next. The bars included the main fair: pasta, meat and meatless sauces, meat and veggie chilies, parmesan/cheddar cheeses, salad, and bread.  For the breakfast bar, we had plenty of cereals, milk,

Family Mountain Reunion 2021: The details

As I prepare for an attentive, inclusive, fun, and comfortable family reunion in the mountains, I'm thinking of the details for 2021 which include the following: Pasta Bar To accommodate many varying diets and to prepare for the big climb, we'll have a pasta bar on Friday night with pasta, meat sauce, non-meat sauce, pesto, parmesan, a big salad, and ice cream.  Breakfast Bar For that early morning, pre-hike breakfast, we'll have a breakfast bar including yogurt, granola, berries, cereal, milk, and maybe pancakes if I can get up early enough--that's a family tradition passed down from my mom.  Sandwich/Snack Bar I'll set up a sandwich/snack bar so that all the hikers can put together what they want for the hike. In fact, we've enjoyed these celebrations so much that we are making an effort to keep the tradition going with a number of yearly get-togethers at special places and during significant holidays and events. With this in mind, I decided to dedicate a blog to family reunions since I want to track these efforts as we work to plan events that are happy, positive, and loving.  Soon, we'll have our growing-up-family reunion, a reunion of interested brothers and sisters and their families. We'll gather at a mountain spot where we spent good times as children. The reunion will include shared meals, hiking, biking, games, and more. Every year this late spring/early summer gathering plays out somewhat differently dependent on who comes, what the weather is like, and multiple other factors. For examp
